SWPL 2: Boroughmuir Derby day returns after 15 year wait

13 September 2025

A remarkable fifteen years and 14 days have passed since Spartans and Boroughmuir Thistle last met each other in a competitive fixture.

That is all set to change this Sunday as the first SWPL 2 Edinburgh derby of the season sees 1st v 3rd lock horns at the Vanloq Community Stadium.

Both squads are likely to feature significant numbers of players who had barely made it out of their nappies when the sides first met in 2008 and much, unsurprisingly, has changed since those early days for the respective clubs.

The first meeting on 31/08/2008 took place in the Premier Division under their new names; Spartans moved from being called Edinburgh Ladies whilst Dalkeith Thistle, promoted from Division 1, became Boroughmuir Thistle.

Spartans finished runners-up to Glasgow City that season, whilst Sunday’s opponents finished 9th.

Six matches were played over a period of three campaigns with Spartans coming out on top on each occasion before Boroughmuir unfortunately withdrew on the eve of the 2011 Premier League season and were replaced by Falkirk.

Now the sides meet once again, this time in SWPL 1 and early Edinburgh derby bragging rights at stake.

Spartans look to maintain their unbeaten start to the season whilst Boroughmuir make the short journey from Meadowbank looking to bounce back following last week’s Sky Sports Cup extra-time exit at the hands of fellow league outfit Gartcairn.

The match kicks-off at 1pm.  Tickets can be purchased in advance via Fanbase or supporters can pay at the gate by card or cash.
