Sky Sports Cup | Spartans fall defeat to Partick Thistle

Spartans travelled to Petershill Park in search of a place in the Sky Sports Cup Quarter-Final after making the Semi-Final spot of last years’ competition.

The game started as a scrappy affair as both sides battled for control of the ball. The first real chance of the game falling to Birse as Gibb played her through on Cunningham’s goal, the Partick ‘keeper quick off her line to deny the striker an effort on goal. Gibb would have the first shot of the game for the visitor’s as she struck wide of the post.

The hosts looked to threaten for the first corner of the afternoon but Yates gathered well. Henderson was next up to have a shot for the home side however, her free kick effort was always sailing wide of mark. Partick Thistle were the ones to open the scoring from a dubious free kick. Henderson getting a free header at a front post and sending it into the bottom corner of the net to give Brian Graham’s side the advantage on the stroke of the half time whistle.

Spartans came out the second half with more attacking intent. Birse finding herself in space in the Partick box, forcing Cunningham into a smart save at her near post. The visitors not able to create from the corner as it floats over everyone and out for a goal kick. Moments later, Mason fired a shot toward goal but again Cunningham was equal to it.

Just seven minutes into the second half the home side would double their lead. Linzi Taylor heading home from close range, giving Yates no chance in the Spartans net. Simone McMahon created a good opportunity to half the deficit, beating her marker on the left hand side with some good skill and delivering a teasing ball into box but Partick cleared. Spartans having a better period play to see the game out, Marshall even hitting the bar from her corner kick effort but ultimately the teams’ Sky Sports Cup campaign would come to an end.
