SWPL | Spartans put in professional performance in Montrose

Spartans came out on top on the road trip to Montrose to secure the first three points of the season.

Montrose would be first to get on the attack through McLaren who looked lively for the hosts, her effort wide of the Alicia Yates’ net. Spartans were quick to reply with a couple attempts of their own, both through Galbraith, the strikers first effort well held by Perry and the second wide of the mark after some excellent play by Gibb.

Spartans would soon have a penalty appeal waved away, Ross bringing down Galbraith in the box but nothing given. Gibb would then try an acrobatic effort which landed on the roof of the net. The wingers work ethic would earn her the first goal of the game, Caley would create the chance for herself and rifle a half volley into the bottom corner.

The teams continued to exchange chances to end the half, Galbraith having an acrobatic effort of her own cleared by the Montrose defence. McLaren once again creating a chance for the hosts, sending a fierce effort towards goal which Yates handled well in the Spartans net.

Spartans started the second half on the front foot, Culley booked in the early stages for pulling back Gibb who continued to look dangerous. Berman had the next chance as her cross looks to be heading all the way in but for McLaren who clears.

It would be the two wingers to combine to create Spartans second of the afternoon, Berman advanced down on Perry in the Montrose net, Spartans number seven cooly passing the ball across the face of the goal for Gibb to tap home.

Montrose would look to cut the deficit as they robbed Spartans of possession on the edge of their box. McLaren getting an effort of on goal as a result which looks to have Yates’ beaten however Foote had recovered to clear off the line to protect the sides’ clean sheet.

Yet again, Spartans wingers would link up to create a goal. Gibb laying a perfectly weighted pass to the feet of Berman who curled the ball into the bottom corner away from Perry’s reach to add on the third.

Hannah Jordan would have a couple efforts to see out the game, the midfielder unlucky not to add on a fourth. The first effort coming as a result of Mya Bates’ great run on the left hand side. The winger broke into the box and cut the ball back however Jordan’s effort was just wide. The second opportunity came as Jordan fired the ball toward goal, looking destined to find the top corner in the final minute of the game but for the glove of Perry to deny her.
